When given the choice to ask for anything, Solomon asks for wisdom. Wisdom is something most people want, but aren't entirely sure of how to get. Proverbs 1:7 provides a simple, yet profound definition of wisdom. It says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge…” Fearing the Lord is where wisdom begins.
This is not describing a fear that is the same as being afraid of spiders or the dark. No, this type of fear that is described in Proverbs is a type of deep awe, reverence, and respect cultivated from understanding who the Lord is. He is the one, true God and is all-powerful over all of creation. Seeing God for who he truly is should stir up a profound sense of reverence toward him, leading us to a healthy fear of the Lord. Proverbs says that this is the beginning of wisdom.
Think it Over: How can fearing God be the beginning of wisdom?
