Wait, Watch, Worship: A Lent DevotionalEgzanp

Wonder (from earth to glory)
Wednesday – 32 days before Easter
Matthew 17:1-9
During Jesus’ transfiguration, Moses and Elijah appeared, two of the most important characters from the Hebrew scriptures. Moses led the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery and guided them through the wilderness for 40 years (Exodus through Deuteronomy). Elijah was a powerful prophet of God who famously challenged the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 17-19). Moses is present at the beginning of Israel’s story. Elijah is present in the midst of it and is then mentioned near the end of the Old Testament (Malachi 4:5-6). The story of Jesus includes the full story of Israel and the entire Hebrew scriptures. The story of Jesus is the story of all history. To understand Jesus, we must know and understand his story before his birth. As you read today, reflect on your own knowledge and understanding of the full story of the Bible. Why do you think the full story matters? How will you more intentionally learn and understand the full story of Jesus?
