Nehemiah arrives in Jerusalem. Again, he doesn’t seem to run toward the people. He doesn’t call a town hall meeting. People didn’t line the streets to welcome the cupbearer of the king. They didn’t know he was coming. Nehemiah laid low for three days. He didn’t speak to anyone, but Jesus. He toured the city. He surveyed the destruction. He prayed for more direction. He paused to learn. He gathered all of the information.
When is the last time you spent significant time in silence or solitude? Three days is a long time. But maybe you can start with 30 minutes; 30 minutes of silence. No distractions. Cell phone on airplane mode. Take a quick survey of your life. Pray for more direction. Pause to learn more about what is going on in your heart and your mind. Gather information. Write it all down in a journal before you take action. Will you take 30 minutes today to practice the spiritual discipline of silence and solitude?
