Maturity
Hebrews 5:12-14
“You need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk not solid food. Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”
The essential teaching about righteousness that Paul spent the first eight chapters of his letter to the Romans explaining is a foundational truth that every follower of Jesus must know and live. We are saved by grace, not works. Jesus fulfilled the law and He is our righteousness. The distinction between good and evil however, is not so glibly understood. Without the foundation of surrendering our will to the will of the Father, denying ourselves and taking up our cross and following Jesus, we don’t have reference points to consider what is good or evil. While our choices related to good or evil won’t affect our salvation, they will affect our transformation or sanctification.
Lord Jesus, teach me to live for the good as you are good – for your glory.
