Stand Firm
Ephesians 6:11, 13-14
“Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes…when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything to stand. Stand firm then…”
What does it mean to stand your ground in spiritual warfare?
Paul first calls us to ‘take your stand’. The stance of a soldier holding ground was rarely alone. He locked shields with his fellow soldiers, braced himself in a defensive posture and used his armor to full advantage. Knowing our authority in Christ and his provision for us is the equivalent of ‘standing’ in spiritual warfare. We know the ground of salvation that Christ has won for us. We know our mission is to go and make disciples of all nations. This call to advance into enemy territory means we will face opposition to our faith and witness. Standing firm in our faith and assisting the disciples of Jesus to also learn to stand, is essential to holding any ‘new ground’ that is claimed. It is one thing to take new ground, another thing to hold it. Our call is to stand firm by the grace of God and in his might and power.
Lord Jesus, I pray for your grace and power to stand firm in my faith today, and to hold the ground you have won for me.
