Seeking God
2 Chronicles 6:1
“Then Solomon said, ‘The Lord has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud; I have built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell forever.’”
While God lives in unapproachable light, he surrounds himself with darkness in his visitations with Israel during their exodus from Egypt. This hiddenness of God is both for Israel’s protection and for their pursuit. God invites us to seek him, to know him. A relationship with God is not for the casual inquirer, but for the seeker. God’s glory filled the temple at its dedication and the priests were unable to fulfill their duties; however, that temple could no more contain God’s presence than a cup could hold the sea.
What about our lives under the new covenant in Christ’s blood?
Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit with whom God desires to fill us. As before, there is both hiddenness and a revelatory expression in God’s presence. To know God, we must humble ourselves.
God invites us to press through the darkness into the light of his presence.
Will we seek the Lord?
Lord God Almighty, my heart says of you, ‘seek his face’. Your face God, I will seek.
