Pride and Humility
2 Samuel 15:1, 14
“In the course of time, Absalom provided himself with a chariot and horses and with fifty men to run ahead of him…Then David said to all his officials who were with him in Jerusalem, ‘Come! We must flee or none of us will escape from Absalom…he will…bring ruin upon us and put the city to the sword.’”
A contrast in leadership health existed between Absalom and David. Absalom needed the affirmation and praise of men to feed the insatiable appetite of pride. David was willing to sacrifice his leadership for the sake of the people he was leading. To spare bloodshed in Jerusalem, David would rather flee from the city. He surrendered his leadership to the Lord because he knew that it was God who had given it to him. Humility is the mark of leaders who know their authority has come from the Lord. Pride marks the lives of self-made men.
What kind of leaders are we?
How we respond when the lives of others are at risk, defines the kind of leader we are.
Lord Jesus, my security, identity and authority are in you. I humble myself before you, and repent for my pride. May you be glorified in and through my life this day.
