I would encourage any believer, and especially young men, to spend time reading and meditating on the Book of Proverbs. As a parent and now as a grandparent, I appreciate Proverbs not only for the godly wisdom it gives, but also for how it speaks from the perspective of a parent trying to prepare a maturing child for the harsh realities of adult life in a sinful world. Whether it comes in the form of violent urban gangs, college fraternities hosting wild parties, slums filled with drugs and prostitution, people you work with or church kids in rebellion, all of us will have some encounters with men and women who are bad influences.

It is no wonder that Jesus commanded us to pray that we be delivered from evil, when evil is all around us. The great thing is that we serve a God who is willing to do just that. As we start down the path of deliverance by filling our hearts with God's commandments, we will actually be guarded by God's wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. (Proverbs 2:10-11)
