Šest dana prije Pashe Isus je otišao u Betaniju, gdje je živio Lazar, čovjek kojega je uskrisio od mrtvih. Ondje su Isusu pripremili večeru. Marta je posluživala, a Lazar je s Isusom i ostalima sjedio za stolom. Tada je Marija uzela oko pola litre skupocjenog mirisa od čistog narda. Pomazala je njime Isusove noge pa ih potom osušila svojom kosom. Čitava se kuća ispunila mirisom. Juda Iskariotski, onaj Isusov učenik koji će ga kasnije izdati, rekao je: »Bolje bi bilo da je taj miris prodan za tri stotine srebrnjaka, a novac razdijeljen siromašnima!« Rekao je to ne zato što se brinuo za siromašne, nego zato što je bio lopov. Bio je zadužen za kutiju sa zajedničkim novcem i često iz nje krao.
