Joyfully Expecting!

DAY 8 OF 11

The waiting rewarded

“Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.” (Luke 2:25 ESV)

Simeon lived in Jerusalem. Politically, it was a difficult time, because Israel was occupied by the Romans. Religiously speaking, there seemed to be little hope. For several hundred years, there had been no prophets to convey God's words to the people. They had to make do with old prophecies and God's laws that had been known for generations. However, the temple in Jerusalem had been rebuilt, and people could go there to pray and offer sacrifices.

In that context, it is remarkable that Simeon “was waiting for the consolation of Israel.” He had apparently not given up hope! We also read how Simeon managed to remain so hopeful: “the Holy Spirit was upon him.” (Luke 2:25 ESV) That Spirit had promised Simeon that he would not die before he had seen the Messiah (Luke 2:26).

Simeon was in the temple when Joseph and Mary arrived with baby Jesus. Simeon knew immediately: this Child is the Savior! Full of joy, he exclaimed: “Lord, now you are letting Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation.” (Luke 2:29-30 ESV)

Simeon's waiting was rewarded. He saw not just a little Child, but the Messiah. That was enough for him; now he could die in peace. Do you agree with him? How would you express yourself?

About this Plan

Joyfully Expecting!

When a woman is pregnant, she is “expecting.” What a beautiful way to describe pregnancy! After all, parents eagerly await the arrival of their child. But no child has ever been awaited as intensely and for as long as the promised Savior: Jesus Christ.
