Small Things

DAY 3 OF 5

Unique moments

What is the best way to confidently express your faith in Christ in the media?

Sometimes, a unique opportunity comes along where you can express your faith to many. It may be an impromptu live interview or prepared remarks.

A sportsperson, near the end of his career, lost critical sponsorship and had to return to his home country. We discussed a possible opportunity. The timing turned out to be ideal as he was able to come beside players in several sports who were open to faith and looking for spiritual answers to life's questions. He started to mentor these emerging players on the country's national team.

One thing he focused on was helping players share their faith in TV and radio interviews. Often, the athletes only had a few seconds to express their faith to the public, and it was critical to be prepared.

Later, these players discussed other options for faith declarations. When the team won an important match or a championship, they put on T-shirts that expressed their faith. The large television audience became aware that winning was wonderful, but loving God was essential.

This positive role modelling has led to players in other countries publicly expressing their faith in similar ways.

Other athletes have not made huge public declarations of faith, but instead have quietly prayed for opportunities to share personally with fellow athletes one-on-one. Both approaches are entirely appropriate.

Scripture to ponder – Romans 10:8 (NIV)

"The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming."

Key Lesson: Each person needs to determine how to express their faith to others. When you have decided, then be faithful to the Lord’s leading. Learn to listen in prayer.
