Authentic Faith in Action: From the Book of James

DAY 23 OF 30

Day 23: Do Not Slander

Slander is often subtle. It can slip into conversations as “venting” or “sharing a concern.” Sometimes it even feels justified—especially when someone has hurt us. But James reminds us that when we slander or judge others, we step into a place that belongs only to God. We not only harm the person we’re speaking about, but we also elevate ourselves as if we are wiser or more righteous than they are.

Jesus’ words in Matthew 7 bring this home with a vivid image. We can be so focused on the tiny flaw in someone else’s life that we overlook the glaring issues in our own. His point isn’t to shame us but to call us to humility. Before we correct or critique others, we need to invite God to search our own hearts.

When we choose not to slander, we choose love. We protect unity, guard trust, and reflect the heart of Christ, who extended grace instead of condemnation.

Reflection: When I am tempted to judge, do I pause to examine my own heart first?

Application: Pray for the person instead of talking about them.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, guard my heart and my tongue from speaking against others. Help me remember that You alone are the Judge, and that my role is to love, encourage, and extend grace. Teach me to examine my own heart first and walk in humility. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
