“30 Pictures of Jesus” 30 Day Plan

DAY 3 OF 30

Today we see Jesus as the Living Water.

In the beginning, God planted a garden and set a river to flow out of Eden, splitting into four streams that watered the whole earth (Genesis 2:10). These rivers were a picture of life flowing outward, turning wilderness into garden, bringing flourishing to the world. Later, the prophet Ezekiel had a vision of water pouring out from the temple in Jerusalem. As it flowed into the desert, the waters became deeper, trees grew on the banks, and life sprang up wherever the river went—even into the Dead Sea (Ezekiel 47:1–12). God’s presence was like living water, able to turn death into life and barrenness into fruitfulness.

It is in this light that Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at a well. She comes thirsty, both physically and spiritually, carrying the weight of shame and rejection. But Jesus offers her something far greater than the water in the well: “The water I give will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14). He is claiming to be the very source of God’s life-giving presence. What Ezekiel saw flowing from the temple, what Eden’s rivers foreshadowed, now flows from Jesus himself.

The woman’s shame did not disqualify her from this gift. In fact, she became the first to drink deeply of this water and the first to share it with her village. While many of Jesus’ own people rejected him, the Samaritans welcomed him as the Messiah, the Savior of the world (John 4:42). Like the rivers from Eden, like the water from the temple, Jesus’ living water was spilling beyond the borders of Israel into the nations.

This is good news. In the final pages of Scripture, John sees the river of life flowing from the throne of God and the Lamb, watering the nations and making the tree of life grow once more (Revelation 22:1–2). What began in Eden, what Ezekiel foresaw, what Jesus offered the Samaritan woman, is the destiny of the world. Jesus himself is the living water who makes the wilderness bloom, the shamed whole, and the nations glad.
