The Holy Spirit Is Promised

The Holy Spirit is not a mystery to avoid; He is a person to know. But have you ever found Him to be confusing?

Many of us confine the Spirit to a heightened emotional experience. The reality is, however, His role in our lives is defined in Scripture as much more. You can expect to encounter the Spirit in personal and active ways each and every day. His presence comforts you, His power helps you, and His person teaches you.

The Spirit is not an impersonal, ghostly force that flits in and out of your story. Rather, He is one of the three equal persons of the triune God, Father, Son, and Spirit, who is a constant and empowering presence in the lives of believers. Amazing!

If you are like many of today’s believers, you may long to experience Jesus’ person and power firsthand like His disciples did. Both before and after His crucifixion, Jesus comforted His disciples by assuring them that His physical departure from the earth would make room for a gift of power: the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised us the Holy Spirit so we would have help to faithfully follow and obey Him. Take a quick look at this video:

After Jesus’ resurrection, He appeared to the disciples and promised that they would be baptized with the Spirit. This stirred questions in the hearts of His disciples. And though He did not offer immediate answers, He did offer a promise: His Spirit would come with power.

Like the disciples, we may find ourselves facing uncertainty, but we are not alone. The Spirit gives us assurance that Jesus is always near.

Jesus, thank You for sending Your Spirit to be with me always. I believe that I am never alone and that Your Spirit will guide me today and enable me to faithfully follow and obey Your words. Thank You for fulfilling Your promise to dwell forever with Your people, and with me. Amen.
