Cradled in Hopeનમૂનો

I remember the day Bridget went to Heaven as if it had happened just yesterday. It’s been ten years, but the memory of being in that hospital bed, holding her inside the cradle my mom had knit for her, is still vivid in my mind.
I can still clearly recall the sensation of her flesh and the features of her face. Yet other days, it feels like an infinite chasm divides the only time I had with her from the time that keeps ticking now. Can you resonate with this feeling? Whether you carried your baby for seven weeks or seven months or they lived for seven days, the time disappeared too quickly.
Oh, how we wish we could go back in time to be pregnant with them again or hold them one more time! We just want more: more moments, more memories, more time with them. We weren’t ready to say goodbye! Time feels so elusive, always slipping through our hands.
While visiting Bridget’s grave one sunny afternoon, it occurred to me that unless the Resurrection happens in my lifetime, friends and family will eventually come to the same cemetery to visit my grave. The thought of death used to disturb me, but I felt an overwhelming peace that day as I daydreamed about being in Heaven with my daughter.
I’ve had many conversations with grieving mothers who have expressed a desire to be with their baby in Heaven. Although it may seem contradictory to long for Heaven without wanting to die, I believe it’s not only possible, but biblical, to feel this way.
According to the Bible, we are “temporary residents” of this earth, merely “passing through” (1 Chronicles 29:15 CJB). The NIV translation of this same verse refers to us as “foreigners and strangers” of this world. Paul wrote that “our citizenship is in heaven” because we “eagerly await a Savior from there” (Philippians 3:20, NIV).
This world is not our permanent home. We can feel it deep within our souls. This homesick feeling is eloquently expressed as “longing for a better country—a heavenly one” in Hebrews 11:16, NIV. Paul reassured us that our eternal Home is in Heaven (2 Corinthians 5:1).
We have a glorious future filled with eternal joy that awaits us. Instead of fixating on what is behind us, we should focus on what is to come. I love these comforting words spoken by Jesus: “Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy” (John 16:22, NIV).
Read those red-letter words again: No one will take away your joy. Oh, this promise hits deep with me. I know you feel it too, momma. Right now, your joy is gone. But to think that one day you will be joyous in the presence of Jesus, and no one—and nothing—will be able to take it away.
Can you imagine a place without sin and death? There will be no hospitals in Heaven. No ambulances or ERs. There will be no diagnoses, disabilities, illnesses, or infections. There will be no morgues, funeral homes, or cemeteries in Heaven. We will never again attend a memorial service or burial.
We will never see another casket, grave, or headstone. We will never have to read or write an obituary ever again. We will finally say goodbye to death and every awful memory associated with it forever.
All of these “former things” will have passed away (Revelation 21:4 ESV). Does this sound too good to be true? In the very next verse, John said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true” (Revelation 21:5, NIV).
Closing Question/Action Step: Do you long for your Heavenly Home? Fix your eyes on Jesus as you await your reunion with your baby.
