A Home is for Creativity

A home presents a special opportunity for the creative person. It’s a blank canvas of sorts—the first page of a book yet to be written. Designing a home that is comfortable and functional for everyone within its four walls demands a certain level of ingenuity and imagination. And as you spend your time communicating with your family members about how to best outfit the home you share, I encourage you to prioritize designing a space that fosters the spark of creativity.

I used to worry that my creative nature got in the way of organizing my home. But that was never the case.

Why does creativity matter? The simple answer is: because our God is a Creator. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” we are told in Scripture (Genesis 1:1). This is the first thing we learn about God, who single-handedly designed the entire universe and spoke it into being. In turn, humankind was made in God’s image—reflections of his unparalleled ability (Genesis 1:27). Is it any surprise, then, that we possess a similar longing to design and create? Having been formed by God’s hands, we have been blessed with the desire and opportunities to build, design, and curate—acts that all stretch the imagination and demonstrate the kind of creativity that defines us as human beings.

Every space transformed is a life touched. And as you move forward, know that you are part of a greater narrative—a collective story of creating a more beautiful, ordered, and joyous world. As you consider what you want your home to become, don’t be afraid of looking for risky and creative solutions to old problems. Seek out ways to encourage your creative and enterprising spirit. A calm, peaceful, and comfortable home can bring comfort and inspiration to anyone who steps inside.
