What Is a Home For?

DAY 3 OF 5

A Home is for Rituals

Here’s a question for you: Have you taken time today to breathe? To slow down? To enjoy the moment and savor the space surrounding you?

While many of us have daily routines, I would argue that rituals are equally as important—and any well-designed and peaceful home will encourage us to pause, reflect, and enjoy the practice of rituals. I define rituals as the special touches that bring deeper meaning to our lives, and they are as unique to us as our fingerprints.

Every season of life comes with its own rhythm and needs. My seasons of single years were simpler, slower, and more introspective. In the bustling years of raising young children, rituals might look like bedtime stories or a Saturday morning pancake tradition. As life shifts, bedtime stories with young children give way to quiet journaling or gatherings with friends.

Rituals can be as simple as brewing a cup of tea or lighting a candle during evening quiet time. On one level, the movement is ordinary, routine. But when approached with mindfulness, the simple motion becomes a meditative practice, a moment of calm and reflection. These acts enrich our lives by turning the ordinary into the sacred. The simple into the holy.

Introducing rituals doesn’t have to be daunting. It starts with recognizing the power of ritual to transform “have tos” into “get tos.” A ritual turns each task into a treasured part of our day. As we fold laundry, prepare meals, or tidy up, let’s find small, intentional ways to add ritual—perhaps a silent moment of gratitude, a particular playlist, or a special apron for cooking. These simple acts shape the moments that bring order and vibrancy to our days, turning routine tasks into opportunities for creativity and purpose.

A ritual can be a moment of worship or prayer, or a cup of coffee and a passage of Scripture. As you consider how to imbue your days with purpose, look for ways and times to connect with God and thank him for the place you call your home.

Reflect

What rituals bring joy and purpose to your day? What rituals might be worth introducing?

Pray

God, I’m grateful for moments of contemplation and peace. Help me to make time for these mindful rituals, whether they be in the morning, afternoon, or night. Amen.
