Experience Fasting in a New Wayનમૂનો

Fasting in the Noise – Finding God in the Silence
Our daily lives are noisy—not just in a physical sense, but mentally as well. Emails, notifications, social media, news—our minds are often filled with voices, to-do lists, and demands. Amid this constant noise, it becomes difficult to hear God’s voice. Yet, the Bible calls us to do exactly that: "Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10).
In 1 Kings 19:12, Elijah does not encounter God in the storm, the earthquake, or the fire—but in a gentle whisper. God does not force Himself upon us. He does not shout, but rather, He whispers to our hearts. To hear that whisper, we must make a deliberate effort to be still. Fasting can help us create this space of silence. Not only by abstaining from food, but also by stepping away from digital media, unnecessary distractions, and excess consumption, we can sharpen our senses.
When we fast from food, we give up something we normally take for granted. Suddenly, there are no chewing sounds, no clattering dishes, no sizzling pans. The familiar rhythm of the day is interrupted, and it is in this interruption that we develop a heightened awareness. In this silence, we can encounter God in a fresh way. But our fasting season should only be the beginning. God desires for us to spend time with Him every day, not just once a year during Lent. Yet, this season gives us the opportunity to practice and discover what works best in our daily lives. Here are a few ideas:
- Digital Sabbath: Set aside one day a week to intentionally reduce screen time. Use this time for prayer, Bible reading, and inner stillness.
- Establish Prayer Times: Begin and end your day with prayer. Even short moments with God can deepen your relationship with Him.
- Two-Minute Prayers: Say quick prayers during everyday pauses—while cooking, on your lunch break, or in challenging moments.
- Prayer in Nature: A walk outdoors can be an ideal moment to talk with God and admire His creation.
- Journaling: Write down your thoughts, worries, prayers, and progress to reflect on your personal growth.
At first, silence may feel unfamiliar or even uncomfortable. But silence is not a punishment—it is the space where we can experience and hear God most profoundly. He does not wait for us in the noise but in the quiet, still presence. Fasting helps us step into that space so we can hear what He longs to say to us.
Next Step: Intentionally step into silence and ask the Holy Spirit how you can integrate time with Him into your daily life.
