May 25 – Literal vs Figurative Interpretation

Scripture contains both literal and figurative language. Some passages are meant to be taken directly, while others use symbols, parables, or metaphors to communicate truth. Understanding the difference is essential for accurate interpretation.

This matters because misreading literary style leads to misunderstanding. Recognising whether a passage is literal or figurative helps preserve the intended meaning and prevents confusion.

When this distinction is ignored, people either over-spiritualise clear passages or take symbolic language literally. This leads to distortion and sometimes extreme interpretations.

DAILY EXERCISE
Identify one figurative passage in Scripture.
Explain its meaning in plain terms.

PRAYER
Father, give me understanding to rightly interpret Your Word. Help me to recognise both literal and figurative expressions. I pray for believers, students, leaders, and families across Nigeria that they will interpret Scripture correctly. Lord, we ask that across nations, Your Word will be understood clearly. Strengthen the Church worldwide in accurate interpretation.
