Sitting, Serving, Scheming (S4-E5)

DAY 1 OF 4

Good, better, best

What are you focused on?
What are you striving for?

Do you go for what’s good?
Do you reach out for what’s better?
Or do you want to give yourself fully to what’s best?

In this episode of The Chosen, Jesus says, “I invite you to something better: to sit at My feet and learn from Me.” Luke 10 tells the story of two sisters: Martha and Mary. Martha is busy serving, while Mary sits at Jesus’ feet, listening. Both are doing good things. Serving and showing hospitality are valuable. But Jesus makes a distinction: Mary has chosen what is best.

When Jesus speaks of what’s necessary or needed, He’s talking about His Word. It’s not that our work or service doesn’t matter, but they cannot replace time with Him.

So how do you make room for what is best? Here are two suggestions:

1. Start with it

Try beginning your day with Jesus’ words. Before checking your phone, before everything else, pause to read Scripture. Even if it’s just a few minutes, let His voice come first. You can always come back later in the day to sit again at Jesus’ feet.

2. Build a routine

Routines shape us. They form rhythms that carry us through life.

Build a routine that helps you spend time with Jesus every day. Pick a time and a place. Find a reading plan, a book, or a podcast that helps you stay on track.

Create a rhythm that will carry you closer to Jesus.

What do you want to go for?
Good? Better? Or Best?

Reflection Questions

  • Who do you relate to more: Martha or Mary?
  • How can you make space and time in your day for what is “best”: time with Jesus in His Word?
  • How do you start your day: with Scripture or something else?
  • What is one way you could change your daily routine to create more time with Jesus?

Prayer

Lord, Your words are precious to me.
I know that Your words give life.
Please help me to go for what is best.
Speak, Lord. I am listening.
Amen.
