DEALING WITH RESENTMENT
The human mind works closely with our emotions, storing memories—good or bad—and triggering the feelings attached to them whenever something reminds us of those experiences. Many people assume they have fully forgiven, only to discover later—when a similar issue arises—that they are still holding on to bitterness, disappointment, or a sense of betrayal. What you choose to do at that moment reveals the true condition of your heart.
There are three key stages in overcoming resentment.
1. The mindset: being ready to forgive immediately.
2. The determination: choosing God’s will over the devil’s suggestions in every matter.
3. The action: letting go of every sign of an unforgiving spirit.
The action stage is what truly separates the resentful heart from the healed one. One simple and powerful path to overcoming resentment (in form of malice, bitterness, anger, or the urge to speak evil of someone who hurt you) is to pray for them.
We all know that the greatest virtue, according to God’s Word, is love. But not everyone lives in that love. You can only walk in love when you recognize that everything you are is by the grace of God, and that no one owes you perfect behavior. When people treat you well, appreciate them. When they fail to, expect it—and pray for them. Seeing the world through “love-spectacles” makes it easier to pray even for your enemies.
If you cling to what is behind, you cannot effectively reach for what lies ahead (Philippians 3:13–14). Jesus, our perfect model, prayed for His enemies even while oppressed and afflicted (Isaiah 53:7).
As you walk with God day by day, allow Him to work in your heart, leading you gently through the healing process of DEALING WITH RESENTMENT.
