DAY 3 OF 3

Unleashed for Kingdom Commitment

Many people come to church but don’t partake of any of the responsibilities of authentic faith. These cultural Christians come simply to fit in or find a benefit for themselves. We also have what I call casual Christians. Casual Christians are involved in their faith more than cultural Christians, but it’s as if they use it conveniently when they need a crutch to lean on. They apply principles of Scripture that are convenient to them or may benefit them, but many of those in this category are not Christians at all. Then there are also those who are truly saved, born-again believers. But they have not yet graduated to become a true disciple of Jesus Christ. They just want to make sure that heaven is their home without any expectation of personal spiritual responsibility during their time on earth.

Jesus described each of these groups (see Luke 9:57-62). What all these groups have in common is a reluctance to follow Jesus. Too many people make Christianity about Jesus following them. They want Jesus to bless their plans, ideas and desires. But kingdom living involves following Jesus.

God is not opposed to prospering His people. He’s not against improving your life through your work, diligence or investments. But God also allows people to suffer loss or go without. God works through both the good and the bad to bring about good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (see Romans 8:28). The question is, are you following Jesus because of your love for Jesus, or do you come to church and read your Bible, hoping for the kingdom goodies He offers? Sure, there are benefits to following Jesus, but Jesus wants to be sure that we are also game for the difficulties. He wants commitment that is willing to surrender all now.

Jesus wants disciples who have broken free from a divided mind—those who won’t look back or postpone their commitment, holding out for a better offer or more convenient time. Jesus asks us to follow Him when He says to follow Him because advancing the kingdom of God is His priority (see Philippians 3:13-14). People perish for lack of understanding. That’s why Jesus is raising up committed kingdom followers to proclaim the gospel to everyone. Following Jesus and promoting the kingdom of God is an all-in process.

Losing your life for the sake of Christ is what it takes to unleash the kingdom power of God in all you do. Following Jesus is no small thing. It’s not a hobby. It’s not a side hustle. Following Jesus involves a heartfelt, dedicated commitment to Him and what He says to do at all times (see Luke 9:23-26). While there are many benefits and blessings that come with following Jesus, there are also difficulties and troubles. Unleashing the reality of the kingdom means eyes straight ahead—no matter the cost, the difficulty, the trial or the outcome.

Jesus came to earth to do the Father’s business. He has a plan. That plan is non-negotiable. It’s not to be marginalized. It doesn’t come as an afterthought or if you have some extra time or energy left over. Part-time or cultural Christianity won’t cut it. Double-mindedness won’t cut it. Fix your eyes firmly and wholeheartedly on Jesus. Where you are weak, He is strong. Where you lack the ability or wisdom you need, He supplies all. This commitment allows the unleashing of the Holy Spirit’s power for kingdom impact.

What is the difference between being a cultural Christian, a casual Christian or true follower of Christ?

In what areas do you struggle to follow Christ?

What will it take for you to be all-in for Jesus and advancing His kingdom?

Prayer

Lord, You are worthy of my undivided commitment! Give me the strength to be all-in for Your kingdom agenda. Help me to let go of everything that distracts my focus from following You. Thank You that where I am weak, You are strong. Thank You that You are able to use my wholehearted commitment to You for kingdom impact. Amen.

About this Plan

Unleashed by Kingdom Power

This reading plan includes three daily devotions based on Tony Evans’ book Unleashed: Releasing God’s Glorious Kingdom in and through You. This study will explore what is needed in our lives to unleash the power of God in our lives to bring His kingdom to this world. We will look into what it means to unleash God’s kingdom power and authority, what it means to put His kingdom first in our lives, and what wholehearted commitment to God’s agenda looks like in our lives.
