DAY 1 OF 22

When asked about the authorship of the Letter to the Hebrews, the Church Father Origen responded, “Only God knows for sure who wrote this letter.” Even today, we cannot say with certainty who the author is. Many theologians suspect that the style and theology of the letter suggest the writer came from the circle of the Apostle Paul, even though Paul himself is generally ruled out as the author. Because of the numerous references to Old Testament worship, it is also assumed that a) the author was a second-generation Jewish Christian, and b) the readers were Jewish Christians.

The main theme of the letter is encouragement to remain steadfast in faith. The writer unfolds the greatness of Jesus Christ and shows that the messages of the prophets in the Old Testament find their fulfillment in Him. Christ is greater than angels and prophets and mediates a better covenant, built on stronger promises.

What is a covenant?

A covenant (in the biblical sense) is a binding agreement established by God between Himself and people. In the Old Testament, there was the covenant with Abraham, followed by the covenant with Israel at Mount Sinai, where God promised to bless His people if they kept His commandments. In the New Testament, we speak of the “New Covenant,” which Jesus Christ established through His sacrifice on the cross. This covenant is not based on the law but on grace and faith in Jesus, who forgives all sins.

If so much was already given to the people of the old covenant, how much more does this apply to the church of the New Covenant through faith in Jesus! The writer wants to rekindle the earlier passion in faith. This letter is relevant for every believer who has grown weary or lukewarm over time and is tempted to return to their old way of life. Every spiritual renewal begins with a new perspective on Jesus!

Chapter 1

At the beginning, the writer of Hebrews introduces the central figure around whom the entire letter revolves: Jesus Christ! He is the ultimate revelation of God. Whoever sees Him sees the Father (cf. John 14:9). Jesus is the Creator of the world, He holds a far higher position than the angels, and one day everything will be entrusted to Him. Jesus is so much more than any human (prophet) or heavenly messenger (angel) of God.

Reflection

Read the text again. Pay close attention to how Jesus is described. This is the same Jesus who will walk with you throughout today. What a privilege to have Him as your friend and your God!
