The Windshield Life: Leaving the Rearview BehindNäide

When you drive, the rearview mirror is small for a reason. The average U.S. car rearview mirror is about 9” wide by 3.5” tall. By comparison, the average car windshield in the U.S. is 59” wide by 31.5” tall. That size difference is important because what would happen if we got it backwards?

The rearview mirror is only meant for quick glances. The windshield, though, is wide and clear, giving you a full view of where you’re headed.

That’s exactly how God wants us to live spiritually. Paul said, “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal…” (Philippians 3:13-14 NIV).

As Laura shared in the video, we all make mistakes, some of them deeply painful. It’s true, the past may hold mistakes, regrets, or shame, but in Christ, “there is now no condemnation” (Romans 8:1 NIV). God has already “hurled all our iniquities into the depths of the sea” (Micah 7:19 NIV). We don’t belong staring at them in the mirror.

Instead, He calls us to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and the road ahead. The future is wide, open, and full of His grace: “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV).

Don’t get stuck trying to drive forward while looking backward. Glance at the rearview only to remember God’s mercy, but keep your focus on the windshield of hope, freedom, and purpose.
