The Chosen and Friends: God With Us

DAY 19 OF 30

Be Still
From Come and See

While the goal of this entry is for that passage from Luke 10 to leave a mark on your day, we need to start with another passage. In John 6, soon after Jesus has miraculously fed a crowd of thousands, he tells them what they really need to do is feast on him (verses 25-65). It’s chiefly a nod to the sacrifice he’ll make in body and blood, but it’s also a nod to his teaching—the truths he lavishly offers to all who’ll listen. And do you remember what happens? Verse 66: “From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.” But remember, too, that the Twelve remain. And why their steadfastness? Peter sums it up powerfully: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

In most of the entries in our 30 days of seeing what Jesus reveals about God, we’ve taken our time to get to the grand reveal. But not today. We're going to drop the revelation right here in the middle.

Whether preached from mountaintops or across plains in plain-spoken parables, the words of Jesus have revealed themselves to be the only words that point to life in the eternal, while also having the power—when applied—to place life back on track in the here and now. All of this reveals a clarion truth: the words of God bring life. And that reveals another clarion truth: we should always give his words pride of place.

Which brings us back to Luke 10, and two sisters whose respective choices and subsequent actions contrast.

Martha spots the many needs that come with hospitality “done right,” so she chooses to serve, leaving the room over and again to return to the kitchen. Mary, on the other hand, would rather not go anywhere other than the spot right at the feet of Jesus. Of Mary’s posture, Jesus offers a to-the-point—and quite pointed—verdict: “Mary has chosen what is better.”

To sit with God and hang on his every word is better.

It’s best.

Because we know what’s been revealed through the Son: the Father alone has the words of life.
