The Chosen and Friends: God With UsNäide

The Clearly Best—and the Merely Good
From Come and See
There are things in the world that are fine enough.
As loose and lukewarm as the word has gotten, some things are even “good.”
Like comfort and security and personal rights.
But you can get more specific than that: Clothes on your back. A roof over your head. Or, hey—even the world’s purest, most pleasantly aromatic spikenard, tucked away in a jar that’s worth almost as much as the perfumed ointment itself.
All of the above, all fine and good.
But when you place these things alongside everything that’s offered up in the final stretch of the Gospels? Alongside sacrifice, resurrection, and forgiveness? Which is to say, alongside Jesus? Which is to say, alongside God, who creates and redeems and recreates? Well, now you see that there are good things and there are even better things.
There are times—like when you read or watch this story from John’s gospel—where the fog of head and heart clears and you behold the clearly best high above the merely good. Where materialistic bubbles are burst by the revelation Jesus provides about himself and the Father—the clear and present truth that what is offered through him and by him answers the deepest longings and needs you will ever have.
It’s good to see what’s clearly best, because then you’re far less likely to swap it for what’s merely good.
You know, like Judas did.
And you’re far more likely to shatter jars and lavishly worship.
Like Mary did.
