Unvarnished Jesus: A Lenten JourneyMuestra

Jesus Gives the Parable of the Prodigal Son
The story of the prodigal son is Jesus’ most popular parable, and it really is a beautiful depiction of the gospel. But keep in mind that this parable is really about the elder son, not the younger son. Jesus told this parable in response to criticism from the Pharisees that He received sinners and ate with them. Significantly, the parable is without an ending. In the story we are left with the elder brother in the outer darkness, gnashing his teeth and nursing his resentment while the father pleads with him to abandon his religion of meritocracy and join the party. The parable is without an ending because how it ends is up to the Pharisees. Will they join the party of reconciliation already in progress or will they continue in their self-imposed exile from the kingdom of heaven?
