The Man and His Maker
Genesis 2:5-17
…before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground; but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground. And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads. The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. And the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and the onyx stone are there. The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which goes around the whole land of Cush. The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one which goes toward the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates. Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Six times during these 12 verses we see the phrase, “The Lord God.” So, it stands to reason that there are some things that God wants us to know about Himself.
We Can Have Complete Confidence Because He Is…
The God Who Created Us

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground…v.7

Psalm 139:14
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works…

The God Who Gave Us Life

…and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. v. 7

The breath that we breathe, is not our own breath, but the very breath of God.
Psalm 150:6
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.

The God Who Sustains Us

Because God is intricately concerned with all of His creation, we don’t have to worry about trying to figure everything out.

Matthew 6:25-26
“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”

The God Who Assigns Us

The Lord God then took the man that He had formed and placed him in the garden that He planted. And He placed him there to tend the garden.

Seek God for both your purpose and your place.
Psalm 37:23
The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way.

The God Who Instructs Us

Genesis 2:16-17
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat…”

It is not good enough just to know what God has said, we must obey what God has said.
Psalm 100:3
Know that the Lord, He is God; it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

The God Who Gives Us The Freedom To Choose

“…for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” v. 17

God created us with freedom of choice, but there are also consequences for the choices made. While we may control the choice, we cannot control the consequences.
Proverbs 14:12
There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.

Ultimately each one of us must make sure that we are making the right choices.
In Genesis, God revealed Himself through His Creation. In the New Testament God revealed His love through Christ and the Cross. These revelations were given, that we might Know Him.
