Title: "The Fellowship of Forgiveness"
Scripture: 1 John 1:5-10
Speaker: Dr. David H. McKinley, Pastor-Teacher
“Life is relationships; the rest is just details.” ―Gary Smalley
“A good marriage is made of two good givers and forgivers.” —Ruth Graham
1. Forgiveness and Fellowship Must be Understood in Light of God’s Character
“If we lose sight of the ethical nature of God, we miss the truth on which all Christianity is based and land in moral confusion. The purity of the Christian corresponds to the purity of God. Without this moral kinship, there is no fellowship.” —Alexander Ramsay
“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” —C.S. Lewis
2. Forgiveness and Fellowship Require a Willing Confession, Not Willful Claims
“By now Christianity had become a thing of habit; it had become…traditional, half-hearted, nominal… John was writing at a time when the thrill of devotion had gone, and when the flame of devotion had died to a flicker… there were members of the church who found the standards which Christianity demanded a burden and a weariness. They did not want to be saints in the New Testament sense of the term.” —William Barclay
“Worship is always aspiration after, and conformity to, the character of the god worshipped, and there can be no true communion with a God who is light unless the worshipper walks in light. In plain language, all high-flying pretenses to communion with God must verify themselves in practical righteousness.” —Alexander Maclaren
“What you cover, God will uncover. What you uncover, God will cover.”
3. Forgiveness and Fellowship are Gained and Guarded Through the Power of the Gospel
“To claim exemption from sin is to impeach the verdict of God on the human race. If sin be not the fundamental fact in man’s present condition, the gospel is irrelevant.” —Alexander Ramsay
