General notes on message:

Want to Be Happy? Stop Being So Cheap!

An interview with the authors of an enormous new study of generosity

https://newrepublic.com/article/119477/science-generosity-why-giving-makes-you-happy
“If all Christians acted like Christ, the whole world would be Christian.”

Mahatma Ghandi
Did you know that the Bible is saturated with teaching on possessions; 17 of the 38 parables of Jesus are about possessions. In terms of number of verses on possessions, this topic is mentioned in the Bible more than any other:
· 3 times more than love
· 7 times more than prayer
· 8 times more than belief.

About 15% of the bible (2172 verses) deals with possessions – treasures hidden in a field, pearls, talents, pounds, stables etc

1 Peter 4:10

Genesis 39:4

Acts of the Apostles 20:35

Galatians 4:19

“gain all you can, save all you can, and give all you can” because “all that we have is given us by God, and since we have been entrusted with these possessions, we are responsible to use them in ways that bring Him glory.”

John Wesley
“People are not naturally disposed to giving, yet, the life that we all prize, filled with joy and spiritual depth, is closely tied to giving generously and with thankful hearts.”

Donald W. Hinze. To Give and Give Again: A Christian Imperative for Generosity.
George Barna describes transformation this way:

“a revolution of character, which proceeds by changing people from the inside through ongoing personal relationship with God and one another. It is a revolution that changes people’s ideas, beliefs, feelings and habits . . . and generosity.”

Barna, Revolution, 29.
"This aching world is waiting for the people explicitly identified with Christ to be, through and through, the people he intends them to be.”

Dallas Willard with Don Simpson, Revolution of Character 188.

What is a steward?

A steward was a manager of the household in ancient times. The word stewardship comes from the Greek word oikenomous, which means somebody who manages a household. A person doesn't own the household but manages it.

For example Joseph was a steward/manager of Potiphar’s household: “…and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had.” Gen.39:4 As a steward he was to manage the household well, make wise decisions and not waste resources. They were trusted with everything from ensuring the floors were clean, to the finances, to the reputation of the household.

Stewardship is the idea then that God is the owner of all creation and all that we have but he has given us the privilege and responsibility of managing his household. God has given us gifts of time, talents and money to manage His household and we are accountable to him for what we do with what he has entrusted to us.

If we examine the parables and language of Jesus, we see an emphasis on the call to fruitfulness. Jesus calls His people to be fruitful for the kingdom’s sake.

We are not the owners but have been trusted with resources and the care of everything—Creation, gifts and talents, money, time, the gospel—for the sake of God's purposes in the world.

Watch Scott Harrison's story of Generosity Revolution

“I saw that I would never find happiness, purpose or fulfilment in the things that I was chasing. There would never be enough girls, never be enough money, and never be enough fame or status.” He has now brought clean water to 663 million people through his charity: water which in 2015 raised over $35 million.

Join a Team

“Our Church is not built on the talents and gifts of a few but on the sacrifice of many.” –Brian Houston

The Vine church is as effective as our people. The greatness of our church relies on the heart of our people and their willingness to serve others. Our church functions because ordinary people give their time, talents and energy willingly and cheerfully to serve others.

Joining a team is an excellent way to get connected into the life of our church, make friends and help the church to grow. In fact the growth in health and size of our church depends on every member serving and “doing their own special work”:

“…as each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is growing and full of love.”
Eph.4:16 NLT

Read more and join a team http://www.thevinechurch.com/join-a-team/
