Peace with God Through Faith
1 # ch. 3:28 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, #[ch. 15:13; Heb. 12:28]we#5:1 Some manuscripts let us have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2Through him we have also #Eph. 2:18; 3:12; [Heb. 10:19, 20; 1 Pet. 3:18] obtained access by faith#5:2 Some manuscripts omit by faith into this grace #1 Cor. 15:1 in which we stand, and #ver. 11; Heb. 3:6; [ch. 12:12]we#5:2 Or let us; also verse 3 rejoice#5:2 Or boast; also verses 3, 11 in hope of the glory of God. 3Not only that, but we #See Matt. 5:12 rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering #See Luke 21:19; James 1:3produces endurance, 4and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5and #Ps. 119:116; Phil. 1:20 hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love #Acts 2:17, 18, 33; Titus 3:6; [Gal. 4:6]has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
6For #ver. 8, 10; [Hos. 13:9; Eph. 2:5] while we were still weak, at the right time #See ch. 4:25Christ died for the ungodly. 7For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8but #See John 3:16 God shows his love for us in that #ver. 6, 10while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9Since, therefore, #See ch. 3:25 we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from #1 Thess. 1:10; 2:16; See ch. 1:18the wrath of God. 10For if #ver. 6, 8; Col. 1:21; [ch. 8:32] while we were enemies #2 Cor. 5:18-20; Eph. 2:16; Col. 1:20, 21 we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by #2 Cor. 4:10, 11his life. 11More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received #ch. 11:15; 2 Cor. 5:18, 19reconciliation.
Death in Adam, Life in Christ
12Therefore, just as #Gen. 2:17; 3:6; 1 Cor. 15:21, 22; [ver. 15-17; ch. 6:9; Ps. 51:5] sin came into the world through one man, and #ch. 6:23; James 1:15 death through sin, and #[ver. 14, 21; 1 Cor. 15:22] so death spread to all men#5:12 The Greek word anthropoi refers here to both men and women; also twice in verse 18 because #Eph. 2:3all sinned— 13for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but #See ch. 3:20sin is not counted where there is no law. 14Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not #Hos. 6:7 like the transgression of Adam, #1 Cor. 15:45 who was a type of #[Matt. 11:3]the one who was to come.
15But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for #ver. 19; Isa. 53:11many. 16And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For #1 Cor. 11:32 the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought #ver. 18justification. 17For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness #Rev. 22:5reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.
18Therefore, as one trespass#5:18 Or the trespass of one led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness#5:18 Or the act of righteousness of one leads to justification and life for #See John 12:32all men. 19For as by the one man’s #[2 Cor. 10:6] disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s #Heb. 5:8; [Phil. 2:8]obedience the many will be made righteous. 20Now #Gal. 3:19; See ch. 3:20 the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, #1 Tim. 1:14grace abounded all the more, 21so that, #[ver. 12, 14] as sin reigned in death, #See John 1:17grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
