The Beloved and Her Friends
2Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth!
For your love is better than wine. # SS 4:10
3Your delightful anointing oils are fragrant.
Your name is as oil poured out; # Ecc 7:1
therefore the young women love you.
4Draw me after you, and we will run away.
The king has brought me into his chamber. # Ps 45:14–15
Let us shout with joy and rejoice in you;
let us remember that your love is better than wine.
Truly do the young women love you.
5I am dark, but lovely, O daughters of Jerusalem, # SS 2:7; 3:5
like the tents of Kedar, # Ps 120:5
even the tent curtains of Salmah.
6Do not stare at me because I am dark,
because the sun has looked upon me with its heat.
My mother’s sons were angry with me. # Ps 69:8
They made me the keeper of the vineyards, # SS 8:11–12
but my own vineyard I have not kept.
7Declare to me, you whom my soul loves,
where do you pasture?
Where do you lie down at noon with your flock?
And why should I be like one covered up beside the flocks of your companions?
Friends of the Beloved
8If you do not know, O most beautiful among women, # SS 5:9; 6:1
follow the tracks of the flock,
and pasture your young goats
beside the shepherds’ tents.
The Lover
9Like my mare among the chariot horses of Pharaoh, I liken you. # SS 2:2, 10
10Lovely are your cheeks with their hanging pendants; # SS 5:13
even your neck with its string of beads. # Eze 16:11–13
11We will fashion pendants of gold for you
with beads of silver.

resting all night between my breasts.
14My lover is a cluster of henna flowers

Our couch is verdant with leaves.
17The strong beams of our house are cedar,
and our arching rafters are fir trees.
