Psalms 42

42
For the Music Director. A Contemplative Maskil of the sons of Korah.
1As the deer pants for the water brooks,
so my soul pants for You, O God.
2My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. # Ps 63:1; 84:2
When shall I come and appear before God?
3My tears have been my food # Ps 80:5
day and night,
while they continually say to me,
“Where is your God?” # Ps 79:10
4When I remember these things,
I pour out my soul within me. # Ps 62:8
For I would go with the throng of people,
and lead them in procession to the house of God, # Isa 30:29
with the voice of joy and praise,
a multitude keeping festival.
5Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God,
for I shall again praise Him # Ps 42:11; 43:5
for the help of His presence.
6O my God, my soul is cast down within me;
therefore I remember You
from the land of Jordan, # Dt 3:8–9; 2Sa 17:22
and of Hermon, from Mount Mizar.
7Deep calls to deep
at the thunder of Your waterfalls;
all Your waves and Your billows
have gone over me. # Ps 88:7; Jon 2:3
8The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime,
and in the night His song will be with me, # Job 35:10; Ps 63:6
a prayer to the God of my life.
9I will say to God, my rock, # Ps 18:2
“Why have You forgotten me?
Why do I go mourning # Ps 38:6
because of the oppression of the enemy?”
10As a shattering of my bones,
my enemies reproach me,
while they say to me all day long,
“Where is your God?” # Ps 42:3; Joel 2:17
11Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God;
for I shall again praise Him,
my salvation and my God. # Ps 42:5; 43:5
