Job Replies: The Wicked Do Prosper
1But Job answered:
2“Listen carefully to my speech,
and let this be your consolation.
3Bear with me that I may speak,
and after I have spoken, mock on. # Job 16:10; 17:2
4“As for me, is my complaint against man?
And if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled?
5Look at me and be astonished,
and put your hand over your mouth. # Jdg 18:19; Job 29:9
6Even when I remember I am afraid,
and trembling takes hold of my body.
7Why do the wicked live and become old; # Job 12:6
yes, become mighty in power? # Ps 37:35
8Their descendants are established with them in their sight,
and their offspring before their eyes.
9Their houses are safe from fear, # Ps 73:5
nor is the rod of God upon them. # Job 9:34
10Their bull breeds without failure;
their cow gives calves without miscarriage. # Ex 23:26
11They send forth their little ones like a flock,
and their children dance.
12They take up the tambourine and harp
and rejoice at the sound of the flute. # Ge 4:21
13They spend their days in wealth, # Job 36:11
and in a moment go down to Sheol.
14Therefore they say to God, ‘Depart from us, # Job 22:17
for we do not desire the knowledge of Your ways. # Pr 1:29
15Who is the Almighty, that we should serve Him? # Ex 5:2
And what profit do we have if we pray to Him?’ # Job 34:9
16Indeed, their prosperity is not in their hand.
The counsel of the wicked is far from me. # Job 22:18; Ps 1:1
17“How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? # Job 18:5–6
How often does their destruction come upon them,
the sorrows God distributes in His anger?
18They are like straw before the wind,
and like chaff that a storm carries away. # Job 13:25; Ps 1:4
19God stores up their iniquity for their children; # Ex 20:5
let Him reward the people themselves, and they will know it.
20Let their eyes see their own destruction,
and let them drink of the wrath of the Almighty. # Isa 51:17; Rev 14:10
21For what do they care about their households after them,
when the number of their months is cut off? # Job 14:5
22“Can anyone teach God knowledge, # Isa 40:13–14; Ro 11:34
since He judges those who are on high?
23One dies in his full strength,
being wholly at ease and secure.
24His pails are full of milk,
and the marrow of his bones is moist. # Pr 3:8
25Another dies in the bitterness of his soul, # Job 7:11
never having eaten with pleasure.
26They will lie down alike in the dust, # Ecc 9:2
and worms will cover them. # Isa 14:11
27“Behold, I know your thoughts,
and the schemes with which you would wrong me.
28For you say, ‘Where is the house of the prince?
And where are the dwelling places of the wicked?’ # Job 8:22; 20:7
29Have you not asked them who travel the road?
And do you not know their signs?
30For the wicked are reserved for the day of destruction; # Pr 16:4; Ro 9:22
they will be brought forth on the day of wrath. # Job 20:28
31Who will declare his way to his face? # Dt 7:10; Gal 2:11
And who will repay him for what he has done?
32Yet will he be brought to the grave
and will remain in the tomb.
33The clods of the valley will be sweet unto him;
and everyone will follow him, # Job 30:23
as countless have gone before.
34“How then can you comfort me with emptiness, # Job 16:2
since deceit remains in your answers?”
