Nahum Introduction

Introduction
The end of the Assyrian Empire was close. It was about 612 years before Jesus Christ was born. The armies of Babylon, Media and Persia had surrounded Assyria’s capital city Nineveh. The city would soon be destroyed. However, the nations living around Assyria did not feel sorry for them. Neither did the people of Judah. These people all felt the Assyrians were getting what they deserved. That’s because the armies of Assyria were so cruel. They were completely uncaring when they defeated other nations. They were proud of their own strength when they killed and destroyed.
These events provide the setting for Nahum’s prophecies. Nahum gives words of comfort to the people of Judah. But he gives words of judgment to Assyria. Nahum announces that God rules over all nations on earth. God will destroy Nineveh and the whole nation of Assyria. He’ll do it even though he has used the Assyrian army to judge others. Nahum makes sure everyone knows about God’s strength and power. God is just, and he will make things right.
