A Disinterested Cook I’ll be the first to admit I’m not fond of cooking. But as the mother of three sons, it was irrelevant whether or not I enjoyed spending time in the kitchen. It was my responsibility to be certain those boys had three square meals a day. I wasn’t concerned about presentation; it was all about quantity—especially when they reached their teen years. After they were out of the house and well on their way to adulthood, my middle son heard me refer to myself as a bad cook. Perhaps out of gentleness and compassion he corrected me. “Mom, you’re not a bad cook. You’re a disinterested cook.” I considered that title an upgrade and appreciated his kindness.
