For us, Jesus is the ultimate example of love. He spent the entirety of His ministry on Earth not just preaching about love, but actually living it out in everything He did. He was wronged, betrayed, and hurt over the course of His life. He was even killed. Yet still, He made the choice to act in love. In fact, He loved all of humanity so much that He chose to give His life for us. As this verse reminds us, Jesus didn’t wait for us to get it right, or fix it, or love Him in return. He died while we were still in the middle of our mess so that we could find a way out of it. It’s a lesson we can not only embrace for our own faith, it’s one we can apply to the way we love others as well. Of course, this doesn’t mean sacrificing your life or even your own well-being for the sake of someone else. Rather, it’s asking you to consider what it might look like to follow Jesus’ lead and love those around you while they’re still working to get it together. Don’t wait for them to have it all together to love; instead, do what you can to love those around you who need it as they are.
