What is love? When Jesus sees Jerusalem, nearing the time of his crucifixion, he captures the core of God’s yearning for us: “How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me.” God defines love as a pursuing force that is not dependent upon the beloved’s inviting response.
