Paul explains in Romans 6 that baptism is more than a ritual — it’s a picture of what happened to you spiritually when you trusted Christ: “For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives” (v. 4).
When you go down into the water, it symbolizes death. Your old life is gone, nailed to the cross with Jesus. When you come up out of the water, it symbolizes resurrection. You’ve been raised to walk in newness of life, just like Jesus rose from the grave.
Baptism is your personal way of saying, “I belong to Jesus. His story is my story.” You are united with Christ in his death and resurrection. That’s why Paul insists baptism isn’t about religion or ritual but about identification. It’s not just about being washed clean; it’s about living a resurrected life, empowered by the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead (Romans 8:11).
This is what makes baptism so powerful. It’s not just about what you’ve been saved from but what you’ve been saved for — a whole new way of life that points people to Jesus.
Reflection:
How does baptism remind you that you are united with Jesus in both his death and resurrection?
