Words of Comfort, Hope and Joy

ڕۆژی2 لە 30

The title indicates that this Psalm might be interpreted in relation to David’s struggle when his son Absalom turned against him, compelling him to flee from his palace with his family (2 Sam 13:23–17:29). However, throughout the centuries, those facing opposition from enemies, friends, family, or foes have found great comfort in these lines.

In the first two verses, the Psalmist describes the opposition he faces from enemies who even claim that God cannot help him, which sets the stage for expressing his confidence in God in the following verses (3:3—8).In verse three, he affirms his trust in God using three metaphors--shield, glory, and the lifter of the head.

The shield guards a person from frontal attack, but the Psalmist's view of God differs from this everyday use. For him, God is a shield surrounding him, protecting him from attacks from all sides—front, back, left, and right. God's protection is comprehensive.

God's glory is not merely light; it signifies God’s overwhelming presence. It inspires awe in the faithful but strikes fear and brings destruction to the wicked. The Lord’s glory over Pharaoh and his army resulted in their ultimate annihilation (Exodus 14:4,17—19).

The phrase “the lifter of my head” reflects what God signifies to the Psalmist as his shield and glory. God raises his head, burdened with shame and guilt, so he can walk confidently. His face shines at the end, and he steps onto the victory platform. God has silenced his enemies, who declared: "There is no salvation for him in God" (verse 2).

Threats against David came from close quarters, but God restored him to his former glory and power. It was only a matter of time.

This Psalm instils confidence in all those who face valleys similar to those David had to traverse.

Today, let Psalm 3:3 remind you—God is your shield, your glory, and the lifter of your head. When fear or discouragement creeps in, pause and declare His protection over your life. Speak it aloud. Walk in that confidence.
