Reimagine Courage Through the Life of Stephenنموونە

A Life Full of Grace and Power
Do you ever feel like your current role is too small or behind-the-scenes to really matter in God’s kingdom? Maybe you’re serving in practical ways—setting up chairs, preparing meals, caring for others quietly—and you wonder if God could ever use you for something greater. If that’s you, Stephen’s story can reshape your perspective.
Sometimes the most extraordinary ministry flows out of the most ordinary faithfulness.
Stephen wasn’t an apostle, trained theologian, or professional preacher. He was chosen to help distribute food fairly—to serve tables. But Luke introduces him with striking words: “a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit,” and “full of God’s grace and power.” (Acts 6:8, NIV)
This tells us something profound: God’s power isn’t reserved for people with titles. It’s not position that makes someone powerful in the kingdom—it’s character. Stephen was full—of faith, the Holy Spirit, grace, power. And because of that, his influence extended far beyond his volunteer role.
God worked through Stephen miraculously, allowing him to perform signs and wonders. But what really set him apart wasn’t just the miracles—it was his Spirit-filled wisdom. When members of opposing synagogues tried to debate him, “they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.” (Acts 6:10, NIV) That’s the key. Stephen wasn’t relying on natural brilliance or clever arguments. His wisdom came directly from the Holy Spirit. His confidence didn’t stem from training or eloquence, but from the presence of God speaking through him. That made him unstoppable.
Stephen’s story reminds us that when we’re filled with God’s Spirit and grounded in His truth, we gain access to a wisdom and power that go beyond human limits. Education and talent have their place, but God’s Spirit is the ultimate source of effectiveness in both conversation and ministry.
If you’ve ever felt like your role is too small to matter—take heart. Stephen started by serving meals. But because he was full of the right things—faith, grace, and the Holy Spirit—God used him to spark a movement and to bear bold witness in the face of opposition.
How do we become people like Stephen? It starts with being filled. That happens through intimacy with God. When we spend time in His presence, let His truth shape us, and stay responsive to His Spirit, He fills us. And filled people become faithful people. Faithful people become powerful instruments in God’s hands. Don’t underestimate the role you’re in right now. God may be using it to form your character and prepare you for more. Ordinary service is often the training ground for extraordinary impact.
Reflection Questions:
- What would it look like to be “full” of grace, faith, and the Holy Spirit in your daily life?
- In what conversations or situations do you need the Spirit-given wisdom Stephen demonstrated?
Prayer:
Lord, fill me with Your Spirit, faith, and grace. Whether I’m serving quietly or speaking boldly, use me for Your kingdom. Teach me to be faithful in what You’ve given me today. Amen.
