Day 9: From Transactional to Transformational

Many of us approach service as a transaction. We give a little time, write a check, or complete a task, and in return, we feel better about ourselves. But true service, the kind that draws us deeper into Christ, is transformational.

Take an example of a parishioner who describes the difference he felt after joining a mission trip. Before, he served to check the box or feel good. But on that trip, he discovered service was about love: walking with others, sharing burdens, and reflecting Christ’s care. His perspective shifted from “What do I get out of this?” to “How is Christ present in this act of love?”

Service becomes transformational when we focus on the “why.” We serve not for recognition or reward but because Christ first served us. When our service flows from His command to love our neighbor, even the smallest gesture - like greeting with a smile, becomes an act of kingdom-building.

Questions

  • In your life, has service felt more transactional or transformational? Why?
  • How can you let your “why” for serving be rooted in Christ’s love?
