The generations after us
We are used to thinking about the future. In politics, looking ahead is not only sensible, but also necessary: How will future generations live? How can we secure their livelihoods—whether through defense, climate protection, or social services?
These questions are important, and we are right to concern ourselves with them. But as a Christian, you are faced with an even deeper question: What does the Bible say about future generations? What is God's view of the future? How does he view our children, grandchildren, and all those who come after us?
When we read the Bible carefully, we discover that God's history with humanity is always also a history with future generations. He thinks bigger, further, and deeper. Already in the creation story, we see that God is the source of all life (cf. Genesis 1). And this life is meant to unfold in relationship with him and with one another.
Moses puts it impressively when he meets the people of Israel at the end of his life (cf. Deuteronomy 30:19). God wants us to live our lives with an eye to ourselves, but also to the generations that will come after us. This is not an “after me, the deluge” mentality.
Shortly before his death, Moses hands over God's commission to his successor Joshua. He does not tell him how to cultivate the fields or manage everyday life. Instead, he urges him to remain faithful to God and keep His commandments. For Moses knows that the future of a people does not depend primarily on structures, but on their relationship with God.
Why? Because without God, our lives will always be limited and our horizons too narrow if we do not see them through God's eyes. But God himself has greater plans: a new earth and a new heaven (cf. Revelation 21). A place without suffering, without death, and without separation. A home where every generation can live fulfilled, secure, and close to God.
To find our way there, we need to make a decision: I am not God. I am his creature. And from this grows the desire: How can I come closer to this God—the source of all good? Each generation must answer this question anew. And us? We are called to be a guide for those who come after us with our lives.
Next steps: Are there younger people in your circle to whom you can pass on something of your faith journey? Ask God to give you opportunities where you can share your faith with them.
