Depth – The Love That Descends into Our Pain and Sin

The depth of God’s love is an extraordinary reality and often difficult to fully understand. Psalm 40:2 says (KJV): “He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay...” This verse shows us how God’s love does not remain on the surface or address only those who are already strong or righteous, but descends into the deepest abysses of human pain, suffering, and sin.

Depth indicates the extent to which God is willing to enter our broken reality. When we find ourselves “in the miry clay,” that is, in the darkest and most desperate situations of our lives, when we are oppressed by sin, guilt, shame, or loneliness, God’s love does not withdraw or turn away. On the contrary, He comes down with mercy and compassion to reach us, to bring us salvation and deliverance.

This depth of divine love is a powerful message of hope. No condition is too severe or too distant for God. It does not matter how deeply immersed we feel in pain or crushed under the weight of our guilt: the Lord approaches, takes us by the hand, and pulls us out, just as the psalmist experienced.

Understanding the depth of God’s love frees us from any fear of rejection or abandonment. It makes us realize that even in the hardest moments, we are not alone. God draws near, immerses Himself in our wounds, and gently heals us.

This deep love also calls us to change: those who have received so much grace are expected to walk a path of new life, freedom, and testimony, so that others, too, may experience the power of this love that descends into darkness to bring light.

Measure the Unimaginable

Paul invites us to understand the vastness of Christ’s love, which goes beyond all human measure. He speaks of being rooted and grounded in this love, so that together with all the saints we may grasp how wide, long, high, and deep His heart is. It is a call to live a deep and stable faith, rooted in the concrete experience of God’s love that sustains and transforms every believer.
