What's the point of work?

What motivates you to get out of bed each day for work?

A friend of mine asked that question recently on social media. What was the most common response he got?

Coffee!

Now, there are many good reasons to get up and work:

• So you can pay the bills.
• You can feel a sense of satisfaction upon completing a task.
• And potentially you can leave behind a legacy.

But there is one reason that is more powerfully motivating than any of these...

Love.

Work gives us a chance to sacrificially love others through what we do and how we do it.

"Remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ." - 1 Thessalonians 1:3 (ESV)

This is precisely how God works.

In everything He does, He does it out of sacrificial love.

Work gives us a chance to work like the God of the universe works.

"I [God] have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you." - Jeremiah 31:3 (ESV)

That's a pretty powerful motivation for me.
