God is Your Safe Place

Scripture:

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
Psalm 46:1 NIV

Reflection:

The word ‘refuge’ has many synonyms, which include:

  • Shelter: A basic covering of protection from the elements.
  • Sanctuary: Implies a place of refuge and safety, often from persecution or danger.
  • Haven: Suggests a place of comfort and safety, often from hardship or adversity.
  • Retreat: Indicates a place for temporary seclusion or peace, often for contemplation or recovery.
  • Asylum: Specifically refers to a place of refuge from legal or political persecution.
  • Stronghold: Implies a place of physical protection and resilience.
  • Safe house: A place of secrecy and safety, often used for those in danger.

God says that He is your refuge. As you read each of these statements, think about God being your shelter, sanctuary, haven, retreat, asylum, stronghold and safe house. How does God show up for you in these different ways?

Journaling Prompt:

Is there one specific synonym that stands out to you as you read the list above? Ask the Holy Spirit, How does God want to be a refuge for me today?

Prayer:

Lord, when I feel afraid, help me run to You. Remind me that You are my place of safety. Let Your presence calm my heart. Amen.

Practical Tip:

When you feel anxious, close your eyes and imagine running into God’s arms. Breathe slowly and let yourself feel safe in His embrace.
