Harsh words - Words of eternal life
At a crucial time in Jesus' ministry, His potential disciples split into two groups: those who turned back and those who went on (John 6:60-69). The former viewed Jesus' speech as harsh, while the latter grasped that they were “words of eternal life”, even though they were difficult to comprehend.
Jesus did not make it easy to choose to follow Him (Luke 9:57-62; 14:25-35). It's still a challenge to continue following Him today.
The armies of Gideon (Judges 7:3) and Saul (1 Samuel 13:8) had many people who were afraid. We can only rely on those who understand how to follow the Lord with faith. We resist being discouraged by those who abandon the race when faced with difficulties.

The Bible compares the Christian life to a race in Hebrews 12:1. Unfortunately, many people approach it as if it were a sprint, in which a quick start counts, or a middle-distance race to run smoothly. The real comparison is with a marathon, where various things and people are trying to slow us down or stop us. We must approach the race with the right mindset and with the knowledge that God provides us with the means to go all the way. What a tragedy it would be to abandon the race when victory is certain!
