Week 3: Humility in Worship
True and Proper Worship
This week, we're talking about humility in worship. What does it mean to “offer your bodies as a living sacrifice?” That is what it means to worship, so it must be significant, or Paul wouldn’t have included it, but it is not to be taken literally. Paul isn’t suggesting that we sacrifice our physical bodies. He tells believers in Rome (and all who read the Word) to humble themselves before God.
To humble oneself is to recognize that we are imperfect and that God is perfect. We are to surrender or submit to the Holy Spirit so that He may use us as His hands, feet, and mouthpiece.
When we worship Him without thinking of ourselves—how we look to others, whether our armpits stink, or whether we sound like Whitney Houston—we offer “holy and pleasing” worship to God the Father, the only one who matters.
“Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less.” – C.S. Lewis

Action Step: Throw on some worship music today in the comfort of your own home (or where no one can see you) so you can be free from thoughts of yourself while you worship God humbly. You only need to focus on praising God for who He is, nothing more, nothing less.
