Character Reflection
Read John 16:19-24. Jesus took his time to explain that the disciples were going to experience grief and they needed to understand that their impending state would be temporary. Why was it important for Christ to engage the disciples about the grief they would be experiencing in His absence? How is grieving perceived in your context as a measure of Christian maturity?

In John 16:16-33, Jesus takes the disciples through the reality of his departure and the grief they will experience. Jesus compares their confusion and grief to childbirth pains that are soon forgotten because of the joy of receiving a baby. He encourages them that because he has overcome the world, they too will overcome and receive joy from the Father.
