Jesus told the disciples that they would “...grieve and mourn…” John 16:20. In your culture how do people grieve and mourn in the face of loss or pain? How is grieving perceived in your culture?

In John 16:16-33, Jesus takes the disciples through the reality of his departure and the grief they will experience. Jesus compares their confusion and grief to childbirth pains that are soon forgotten because of the joy of receiving a baby. He encourages them that because he has overcome the world, they too will overcome and receive joy from the Father.
